Details: Trump said the impact of the latest strikes on Iran appeared to be "pretty substantial".
Quote: "There was another hit today on the new leadership, and it looks like that was pretty substantial. So they're getting hit very hard."
More details: Trump did not specify which Iranian leaders were targeted or how many people were killed.
The strike followed an initial wave of missile attacks last weekend which officials said had killed 49 Iranian officials, including Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Trump also said "the worst-case" scenario for Iran would be if "somebody takes over who's as bad as the previous person".
Quote: "That could happen. We don't want that to happen. We'd like to see somebody in there, bring it back to the people, and we'll see what happens."
More details: Trump said some of the candidates his administration had considered for the leadership role had already died, adding that "pretty soon, we're not going to know anybody".
Background:
- According to local reports, Israeli forces have hit a building used by the Assembly of Experts, the body responsible for electing Iran's new supreme leader.
- Trump told the New York Post on Monday 2 March he is not saying an outright "no" to deploying American troops in Iran and suggested it could become necessary.
