US President Donald Trump has again complained about Ukraine over the lack of progress in talks on ending the Russo-Ukrainian war and has said that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy now has "even less cards".

Details: Commenting on ongoing talks between Ukraine and Russia mediated by the US, Trump said that "Zelenskyy, he has to get on the ball, and he has to get a deal done".

"I think Putin is ready to make a deal," Trump repeated once again.

The US president did not provide a clear explanation of how he believes Zelenskyy is obstructing the negotiating process but said that Zelenskyy was not showing enough willingness to negotiate and that "it's unthinkable that he's the obstacle".

Trump also once again criticised the Biden administration for supplying ammunition to Ukraine for free, which could instead have been sold to countries in the Middle East.

At the same time, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the US had asked for help in countering Shahed loitering munitions, which Iran is now actively using in the Middle East.

"You don't have the cards. Now he's got even less cards," Trump said, without explaining why he thinks so.

Background:

  • The previous round of talks with the Russians took place in February. Moscow recently said that there is no clarity on the next meeting and its venue because holding talks in Abu Dhabi, as previously planned, does not appear possible due to the war in the Middle East. Signals have come from the Kremlin that Russia may withdraw from the talks if Ukraine does not agree to territorial concessions.
  • The European Commission called Moscow's position "an excuse" and an attempt to drag out the negotiating process.
