The aide noted that the two leaders focused on the conflict around Iran and also discussed the negotiations on resolving the Russo-Ukrainian war.

He said Putin expressed "a number of considerations" aimed at a swift political and diplomatic settlement of the situation around Iran.

The Russian leader also praised the mediation efforts by the United States and Trump personally regarding the settlement of the war in Ukraine.

Ushakov added that the conversation was "businesslike, frank and constructive".

Background:

  • On 9 March, the European Commission warned that the US-Israeli war against Iran could simultaneously trigger stagnation and inflation in the European economy.
  • The statement came as the price of Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, soared to US$119 per barrel on Monday morning, the highest level since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
  • Oil prices later fell below US$100 per barrel after it was reported that the G7 is considering releasing strategic oil reserves to soften the impact of the surge in energy prices.
  • On 9 March, Putin said that Russia is ready to work with European energy buyers provided they are willing to commit to long-term cooperation devoid of "political opportunism".
