Details: In a written post and a video containing a longer version of his statement, Orbán stressed that Hungary "will not yield to pressure from Ukraine and Brussels", arguing that Hungarians had succeeded in freeing themselves from communist rule in the past.
Quote: "If we were capable of overthrowing communism, fighting for our freedom and sending Soviet troops home, if we were able to build a Hungary based on a civic, national, Christian constitution, then we're not going to yield under pressure from Ukraine's President Zelenskyy, Brussels or their agents in Hungary. Don't be ridiculous."
Background:
- "Ukrainian threats and blackmail" and "resistance to pressure from Brussels" have become central themes in Orbán's campaign ahead of the parliamentary elections on 12 April, after which his Fidesz party risks defeat by the opposition Tisza party led by Péter Magyar, which continues to lead in the polls by 14 percentage points.
- EU decisions of crucial importance for Ukraine that are currently stalled by the Hungarian veto are highly unlikely to be unblocked before then.
- According to European intelligence services, Russian secret services have suggested staging an assassination attempt on Orbán as the ruling Fidesz party's ratings continue to fall. European investigative journalists have reported on how Russia is helping Orbán improve his chances of winning.
- US President Donald Trump has wished Orbán victory in the elections, saying he hopes he will "win big". Vice President JD Vance is expected to visit Budapest soon in a show of political support.
