Russia attacks Ukraine with 426 aerial assets, air defences intercept most but hits reported

Russian forces conducted a large-scale combined strike on Ukraine's critical infrastructure using drones and air- and ground-launched missiles on the night of 23-24 March. Ukraine's air defences have downed 390 out of 426 aerial assets.

Details: In total, Ukrainian air surveillance troops detected 426 aerial assets:

  • 7 Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles (launched from Russia's Kursk Oblast and temporarily occupied parts of Donetsk Oblast)
  • 18 Kh-101 cruise missiles (launched from airspace over the Caspian Sea)
  • 5 Iskander-K cruise missiles (launched from Russia's Bryansk Oblast)
  • 4 Kh-59/69/31 air-to-surface missiles (launched from Russia's Kursk Oblast and temporarily occupied parts of Donetsk Oblast);
  • 392 Shahed, Gerbera and Italmas attack UAVs and other types of drones launched from the Russian cities of Bryansk, Kursk, Oryol, Shatalovo, Millerovo and Primorsko-Akhtarsk as well as Hvardiiske in temporarily occupied Crimea

About 250 of the UAVs were Shahed loitering munitions.

Early reports indicated that as of 09:00, Ukrainian air defence forces had destroyed or jammed 390 aerial assets, namely 25 missiles and 365 drones:

  • 18 Kh-101 cruise missiles
  • 5 Iskander-K cruise missiles
  • 2 Kh-59/69/31 air-to-surface missiles
  • 365 drones of various types

Hits by 6 missiles and 27 UAVs had been recorded at 22 locations and the fall of downed aerial assets (debris) at 10 locations.

Information regarding three Russian missiles is still being confirmed.
