Details: The American leader was commenting on Merz's position regarding Iran, in particular his statement that "this is not our war".
Quote: "That's why when I heard the head of Germany say, 'this is not our war' about Iran, I said: 'Well, Ukraine's not our war, we helped, but Ukraine's not our war'.
I said: 'Well, you know, Ukraine's not our war, and it's not, but I would like to see all those young people stop being killed and then they're being killed'."
More details: The head of the White House repeated that "tremendous hatred" exists between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian ruler Putin.
At the same time, Trump asserted that the US has a chance to end the war, even though it does not "affect" the country.
"And I think that's calming down a little bit, and I think we have a chance of getting it done. But it doesn't affect us, because we are thousands of miles away," the US president stated.
Background:
- At the same meeting, Trump commented on media reports about the possibility of redirecting to the Middle East American weaponry intended for Ukraine. He stated that the United States takes such steps on a regular basis.
- Media also reported that Russia offered the US a deal under which the Kremlin would stop passing Iran intelligence information – namely, precise coordinates of American military facilities in the Middle East – if Washington ceased providing Ukraine with intelligence data on Russia. According to sources, the US rejected this proposal.
- US President Donald Trump had previously declined to answer journalists' questions about possible Russian assistance to Iran, calling them "stupid".
