The US funding will support two types of programmes – the direct tracking of deported children, and projects supporting the Ukrainian government and trusted local partners in the rehabilitation of those returned.

"President Trump has made clear that the tragic bloodshed in Ukraine must stop, and his Administration remains fully committed to securing a lasting peace," the statement reads.

The State Department stressed that the US continues to fund dozens of assistance programmes for civilians affected by the violence caused by Russia's war against Ukraine.

Background:

  • US First Lady Melania Trump wrote a "letter of peace" to Vladimir Putin in August 2025, calling for action regarding Ukrainian children removed by the Russian occupation administration. Donald Trump handed the letter to the Kremlin leader ahead of the Alaska summit.
  • On 4 December, the First Lady said that seven abducted Ukrainian children had been able to return home thanks to "bridge-building" by Ukraine and Russia.
  • On 12 February 2026, the White House announced that Melania Trump had once again helped facilitate the return of abducted Ukrainian children to their families.
