Slovak PM calls European Commission "ship sailing towards its death" after talks with Hungarian PM

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has said following a phone call with his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orbán that the EU should "return to common sense", which he believes means resuming dialogue with Russia on energy resources.

Details: Earlier today, Orbán called on the EU to "lift sanctions and restrictions" imposed on Russian energy, citing the situation in the Middle East.

Fico later echoed the call, urging the EU to "return to common sense".

"The entire EU, and especially the European Commission, is beginning to resemble a ship sailing towards its death when it comes to energy security," Fico claimed.

He claimed that the governments of Slovakia and Hungary are "doing everything possible to protect their national economies and citizens from the ideological blindness and incompetence of the European Commission, the hostile president of Ukraine and the repercussions of the war against Iran".

According to Fico, "the EU, and the European Commission in particular, must immediately resume dialogue with Russia and ensure a political and legal environment that will enable individual member states and the EU as a whole to replenish their depleted gas and oil reserves and secure supplies of these strategic raw materials from all possible sources and routes, including Russia."

In his view, the "senseless sanctions" banning imports of Russian gas and oil "must be lifted".

Fico also believes that "a separate EU initiative should be launched to bring the war in Ukraine to an end as soon as possible, and decisive steps must be taken to restore the operation of the Druzhba pipeline".

Background: On 19 March, Orbán said Hungary will not unblock any decision favourable to Ukraine until the flow of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline is restored.
