Zelenskyy on Kyiv shooting: 5 killed, 10 hospitalised, 4 hostages rescued

Five people have been killed, 10 hospitalised and four hostages rescued following a shooting in Kyiv's Holosiivskyi district.

Quote: "Ukraine's Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko has just reported that the attacker in Kyiv who opened fire on civilians has been eliminated. All the circumstances are being established. At present, 5 people have been confirmed killed. My condolences to the families and loved ones.

Ten people are currently hospitalised with injuries and trauma. All are receiving the necessary assistance. Four hostages have been rescued."

Details: Zelenskyy expects a prompt investigation.

"Investigators of the National Police and the Security Service of Ukraine are working. I have instructed the Minister of Internal Affairs and the Head of the National Police of Ukraine to make all verified information in this case available to the public," Zelenskyy added.

Background:

  • On 18 April, a man opened fire on people in Kyiv's Holosiivskyi district, leaving people dead and injured. Police conducted a special operation to detain the attacker.
  • The man who carried out the fatal shooting was later killed during the arrest.
  • According to Ukrainska Pravda's sources, his name was Dmytro Vasylchenkov, born on 21 April 1968. He was born in Moscow, held Ukrainian citizenship and had previously lived in Bakhmut, Donetsk Oblast, before later moving to Kyiv's Holosiivskyi district.
