Olha Stefanishyna, Ukraine's Ambassador to the United States, has called on the US administration to reinstate sanctions restricting trade in Russian oil, stressing that Russia must not benefit from the actions of its ally Iran.

Quote: "We urge the US administration to reinstate sanctions on Russian oil and petroleum products. It is in our common interest to limit the funding Russia uses for its attacks on Ukraine and for aiding US adversaries."

Details: Stefanishyna noted that if Russia sees that destabilisation and fuelling war are profitable, "new problems in the world will not be long in coming".

"Notably, the Russian representative has already called the oil waiver a 'cooperation'," she added.

Background:

  • On 12 March, the US lifted sanctions on Russian oil that had been loaded onto tankers at sea at that time. The exemptions were in place until 11 April.
  • US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the administration was unlikely to grant a new waiver allowing countries to purchase sanctioned Russian oil as part of any measures to curb high fuel prices.
  • On 16 April, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that the US "will not be renewing the general licence on Russian oil".
  • On 17 April, the US lifted sanctions restrictions on the purchase of Russian oil and petroleum products loaded on vessels for 30 days, despite earlier public assurances that the licences would not be renewed.
