Trump has accused Iran of violating the ceasefire agreements, pointing to an attack on French and British vessels.
The US president announced that a new round of negotiations will take place in Pakistan's capital Islamabad, where American representatives will arrive on Monday evening.
Trump stated that Iran is "helping" Washington by blocking the Strait of Hormuz, since, according to him, this costs Tehran US$500 million per day while the US "loses nothing".
"The United States loses nothing. In fact, many Ships are headed, right now, to the US, Texas, Louisiana, and Alaska, to load up, compliments of the IRGC [the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps – ed.], always wanting to be 'the tough guy!'," he wrote.
Trump also issued further threats against Iran, stating that if the country does not agree to a peace deal, the US will attack all Iranian power plants and bridges.
"We're offering a very fair and reasonable DEAL, and I hope they take it because, if they don't, the United States is going to knock out every single Power Plant, and every single Bridge, in Iran. NO MORE MR NICE GUY! They'll come down fast, they'll come down easy..." Trump said.
Background:
- Trump previously stated that he may not extend the temporary ceasefire between the US and Iran if negotiations do not lead to a final ceasefire agreement by 22 April.
- On 18 April, Iran again blocked the Strait of Hormuz, critical for oil exports from Gulf states, because the US has refused to lift the naval blockade of Iranian ports in the Gulf.
- On 17 April, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that under the terms of the ceasefire in Lebanon, passage for all commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz has been declared fully open for the duration of the truce.
- However, Trump said in response to that announcement that the blockade of Iranian ports "will remain in full force" until the US-Iran agreement "IS 100% COMPLETE".
