Details: Responding to a question about reports that Tehran has proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz after negotiations fell through, Rubio said the US cannot accept a situation in which Iran continues to decide which vessels may pass through the strait or imposes any Iranian fees.
Quote: "If what they mean by opening the straits is, 'yes, the straits are opened, as long as you coordinate with Iran, get our permission, or we will blow you up and you pay us,' – that's not opening the straits."
Background:
- US President Donald Trump said last weekend that US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would not be travelling to Pakistan for talks with Iran.
- Trump also said that Iran could call the US to negotiate an end to the war.
- On Sunday 26 April, he added that Iran has about three days before its oil pipelines could "explode" due to technical issues exacerbated by the US blockade.
