Details: The previous tariff rate agreed by Brussels and Washington under the trade deal was 15%.

Background:

  • The Trade Deal is a framework trade agreement between the EU and the US concluded in Turnberry, Scotland, on 27 July 2025, which set tariffs on European imports into the United States at 15%.
  • On 26 March, the European Parliament adopted two proposals concerning tariffs within the framework EU-US trade agreement.
  • MEPs supported strengthening the safeguard clause, which would allow for the suspension of all or part of the preferences if the US imposes additional tariffs exceeding the agreed 15% threshold or introduces any new duties on European goods.
  • The European Parliament also added a provision stating that new tariffs would take effect only if the United States complies with its obligations.
  • Ratification of the agreement in the European Parliament was postponed twice – in January, in protest of Donald Trump's demand to be given control over Greenland, and again in February amid new tariff announcements. At that time, the US president promised to raise overall tariffs for all countries to 15%.
