Yuri Ushakov, an aide to Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin, has claimed that Vladimir Putin held a phone call with US President Donald Trump, during which he expressed readiness to declare a "truce" on Victory Day, a Russian holiday commemorating the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in 1945, celebrated on 9 May.

The Kremlin said the phone call lasted about 1.5 hours.

During the call, Putin complained to Trump about alleged Ukrainian attacks on civilian targets in Russia. He also said Russia will achieve its goals in the war, but "seeks to do so through negotiations".

Trump, for his part, said a deal to end the war in Ukraine is "almost there".
