The state-run railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia (Ukrainian Railways) is installing more than 800 modular shelters across the country. The shelters are being manufactured in-house at the company's facilities.

Details: The shelters are primarily being installed in the most dangerous locations – near critically important facilities that keep trains running, and at stations where there are no permanent shelters.

"Yesterday one such shelter in Kharkiv Oblast saved a train attendant's life. She evacuated and reached the shelter in time after receiving a danger warning. The carriage was completely destroyed by an enemy drone," the company said.

Ukrzaliznytsia noted that around 983 attacks on railway infrastructure have been recorded since the beginning of the year.

Background:

  • At around 07:30 on 5 May, a Russian UAV attacked and destroyed a train carriage in Kharkiv Oblast.
  • In Poltava Oblast, a Russian drone struck between railway tracks near a diesel locomotive. No casualties were reported. A carriage was damaged and caught fire after the explosion.
  • Another strike hit a station in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. An electric-powered locomotive standing on the track was damaged during the UAV attack.
