The United States Congress is unlikely to approve a new financial aid package for Ukraine while supporting tougher sanctions against Russia.

Details: Mast said European countries should take greater responsibility for supporting Ukraine, as the war was taking place "in their backyard".

Quote: "I do not believe that you will see a US, call it a security supplemental to Ukraine, for US$6 billion, US$60 billion, or any other amount."

More details: Mast said Washington will continue to provide Ukraine with intelligence support and allow the sale and transfer of weapons, even if Congress does not approve a new large-scale aid package.

His remarks reflect growing scepticism about support for Ukraine among Republicans close to US President Donald Trump, despite calls from some politicians in both parties for new assistance for Kyiv and tougher sanctions against Moscow.

Background:

  • On 13 May, a petition in the US House of Representatives aimed at forcing a vote on military aid for Ukraine and new sanctions against Russia gathered the required 218 signatures. The vote may take place in June.
  • In mid-May, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that Ukraine would receive US$400 million in assistance to defend against Russian aggression.
