Moscow oil refinery reportedly suspends operations after Ukrainian 17 May drone attack

The Moscow Oil Refinery has suspended oil processing after drone attacks on Sunday 17 May.

Details: The damage caused by the drone strike was not critical, but operations were halted as a precaution to avoid risks. Restarting the refinery could take several days.

The Moscow refinery belongs to Gazprom Neft, a subsidiary of the state-controlled Gazprom.

In 2024, the refinery processed 11.6 million tonnes of oil and produced 2.9 million tonnes of petrol, 3.2 million tonnes of diesel fuel and 1.3 million tonnes of bitumen.

Background:

  • As reported earlier, drones attacked Moscow and the surrounding region on the night of 16-17 May. Local residents reported hearing numerous explosions.
  • It marked the largest attack on Moscow and the surrounding region since the start of its full-scale war against Ukraine. The main reported targets included the Elma Technopark in Zelenograd, the Solnechnogorsk fuel loading station in the village of Durikino, and Sheremetyevo International Airport.
