Details: The foreign ministers of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland condemned Russia's threats to use force against Latvia and other countries in the region. In the statement, they emphasised that incidents involving drones entering NATO airspace are a direct consequence of Russia's illegal war against Ukraine.

The ministers also reiterated that their countries do not allow their airspace or territory to be used for attacks on Russian targets.

Through its accusations and disinformation, Russia is attempting to divert attention from its war against Ukraine and to intimidate NATO allies, but it is failing, the document states.

The foreign ministers of the Nordic and Baltic countries also reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine and its right to self-defence.

Background:

  • On 22 May, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna stated that Russia is deliberately directing Ukrainian drones into NATO airspace in an attempt to weaken support for Ukraine.
  • Earlier, Estonia summoned the chargé d'affaires of the Russian Federation to deliver a note of protest over the disinformation campaign targeting the Baltic states.
  • Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže once again rejected Russian claims that the Baltic states have allowed Ukraine to use their airspace for strikes against Russia, noting that Moscow is seeking excuses for its vulnerabilities to Ukrainian attacks.
