Details: Trump was asked whether, after Zelenskyy proposed a personal meeting with Putin, he would prefer them to speak first without US involvement.
"I don't mind. Let them deal. I'm the one that got them to this position, and I think that's going to get worked out," the US president replied.
He also expressed confidence that a moment is now approaching when the issue between Russia and Ukraine must be resolved.
"It's a war that should have never happened, would have never happened if I was president. But I think that's going to get worked out," Trump added.
Background:
- Zelenskyy sent a letter to Putin stating that Ukraine-Russia negotiations should include Europe and the US and that the US could help monitor a ceasefire.
- Trump supported the idea of a bilateral meeting between the leaders of Ukraine and Russia.
- Putin, however, said he had seen Zelenskyy's open letter and "sees no point in holding a meeting".
