Russia's strike on nuclear facility investigated as war crime, IAEA building damaged – photos

During a Russian strike on the territory of the Centralised Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility near the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, the IAEA administrative building and the spent nuclear fuel reception and transfer building were damaged. The Security Service of Ukraine has classified the incident as a war crime.

Quote from the Office of the Prosecutor General: "On 7 June 2026, at approximately 02:05, the Russian Armed Forces struck the territory of the Centralised Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility, located in the exclusion zone near the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, with a Geran-2 type unmanned aerial vehicle.

As a result of the attack, the spent nuclear fuel reception and transfer building and the IAEA administrative building were damaged.

Early information indicates the strike did not affect the facility's operational processes. Radiation levels are within normal limits. There are no fatalities or casualties."

Details: Under the procedural supervision of the Kyiv Oblast Prosecutor's Office, a pre-trial investigation has been opened into another act of nuclear terrorism by the aggressor state and violations of the laws and customs of war under Article 438.1 of Ukraine's Criminal Code.

The Security Service of Ukraine has stated that it considers the Russian strike on the Centralised Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility a war crime.
