Moldova seeks Kyiv's input on interceptor drones, president says – photo
The war in Ukraine has shown that Moldova urgently needs high-tech interceptor drones, and that new legislation is needed to facilitate their production, Moldovan President Maia Sandu said in a podcast with a local blogger, Reuters reports.
"Those who want our country to be completely defenceless must understand that there is a risk that drones will fall on us and we won't be able to do anything about it," Sandu said.
Sandu said she has instructed the government to prepare legislative changes to develop the country's defence industry.
"I have asked the government, particularly in the context of recent events, to begin introducing or preparing legislative amendments," the president noted.
Sandu noted that the new legislation will enable the establishment of public-private partnerships for weapons development and will also include provisions for attracting foreign investors.
She added that Moldova has begun consultations with Ukraine on the development of interceptor drones.
"Ukrainians are the best in terms of interceptor drones," Sandu said. "We will try to secure technology from there to the extent that we can with our capabilities. In order to use these technologies, we must first build up a team of experts."
Moldova has repeatedly reported cases of Russian drones flying over its territory or their debris falling near populated areas.
The Ukrainian company Yartura introduced the Dancer 4.5.0 aircraft-type interceptor drone for engaging Russian UAVs and other airborne assets.
It was previously reported that an Estonian interceptor drone capable of accelerating to 500 km/h had been tested in Ukraine.
