EU officially confirms start of accession talks with Ukraine

The European Union will hold intergovernmental conferences with Ukraine and Moldova on 15 June, during which the first cluster of accession negotiations will be opened.

Details: "On 15 June, under the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, we will convene the first Accession Conferences with Ukraine and Moldova to open Cluster 1 – Fundamentals," the Cyprus Presidency said, adding that it is proud to have helped make this historic moment possible.

Background:
- On 12 June, the Ukrainian government approved and submitted to Brussels a revised version of its national action plan on the protection of minorities, drafted in a form agreed with EU member states.
- The Ukrainian government considers it realistic to open all six negotiating clusters by July.
- Following the opening of the first cluster, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to attend the European Council meeting on 18-19 June.
