Details: Starmer said he had ordered the Armed Forces to intercept a shadow fleet oil tanker attempting to transit the English Channel. He said the operation was another blow to Russia over its war against Ukraine.
Quote: "This successful operation delivers yet another blow to Russia and reminds those fueling Putin's war in Ukraine that we will not let them hide. I want to thank those involved, including our Armed Forces and law enforcement officers who keep this country safe 24 hours a day, 365 days a year."
Background:
- In March, Starmer announced that the Armed Forces and law enforcement agencies of the UK will be able to intercept and detain sanctioned vessels from Russia's shadow fleet transiting through British waters.
- The UK has repeatedly taken part in French operations targeting sanctioned Russian shadow fleet tankers. The most recent such operation took place on 31 May in the Atlantic Ocean. The Russian shadow fleet oil tanker Tagor was intercepted over 400 nautical miles (740 km) west of the westernmost point of Brittany. The vessel had departed from the Russian port of Murmansk under a false Cameroonian flag and was bound for Limbe, a port city in western Cameroon.
- Last week, France placed the Russian captain of the shadow fleet tanker Tagor in custody. He faces up to one year in prison and a fine.
