Quote: "Now we are dealing with Russian terrorists who have already outmatched ISIS in their crimes against cultural heritage. Only Russian scum who have nothing sacred can deliberately damage the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a unique UNESCO heritage site under special protection."
Details: Sybiha added that Russian leader Vladimir Putin had "forever put his name on the list of history's worst barbarians" by striking one of Christianity's most important holy sites.
"We will be urgently initiating all relevant procedures within UNESCO and all other international mechanisms, demanding immediate and adequate responses to this state barbarism.
We expect strong reactions by international institutions and capitals. No vague words, silence, or weak steps. We need action now to stop Russian barbarism," he stated.
Background:
- A fire broke out on the grounds of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra following a large-scale Russian attack on Kyiv. Kyiv City Military Administration reported a precise strike on the monastery complex and significant damage to its buildings.
- Metropolitan Epiphanius, Primate of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, later posted a statement on social media, describing the Russian strike on the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra as "another crime against humanity".
