Commenting on the course of the war in Ukraine, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has said he believes the initiative no longer belongs to Russia.

Details: Sikorski noted that Ukraine's successful resistance – which analysts believe has even begun to shift the course of the war in Kyiv's favour this year – has so far deprived Russia of the resources it would need to carry out an effective invasion of NATO's eastern flank.

Quote: "Ukraine has certainly won in the Black Sea. Russia certainly doesn't have air domination over Ukraine. It can send missiles and drones, but it cannot fly freely over Ukraine. The ground war is stuck and Ukraine seems to have gained fire control over a strategic highway from Donbas to Crimea."

More details: The minister added that wars generally do not unfold linearly, but pass through certain phases.

"But it looks like the phase of Russia having the initiative has ended," Sikorski stressed.

Background:

  • Estonia's Ministry of Defence previously said that Ukraine's ability to launch long-range strikes has put the Kremlin in a difficult position, as Russia's existing air defence capabilities are insufficient to protect all facilities.
  • Media reports also indicate that US President Donald Trump privately advised President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to act "more boldly" towards Russia.
  • According to the Financial Times, Trump also told Zelenskyy that he has been impressed by Kyiv's recent military successes.
