Ukrainians' opinion split on where borders will be after war ends, poll shows

Ukrainians are divided over where Ukraine's borders will be when the war is over: 32% believe the border will correspond to the current front line, while 31% say the country will regain all the territory it had when independence was declared in 1991.

Details: According to the survey, 32% of Ukrainians said that after the war ends, Ukraine's borders will run along the current front line.

Meanwhile, 31% of respondents believe Ukraine will maintain all the territory it had in 1991.

A further 16% said Ukraine will regain the territories it controlled before Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022; 7% said Ukraine will regain Donbas but not Crimea; 5% said Ukraine will regain Crimea but not the "Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics" [self-proclaimed Russia-backed quasi-state formations in Ukraine's Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts – ed.]; 1% said Ukraine will be occupied by Russia; and 3% gave other answers.

For reference: The poll was conducted by the Rating Group for the Center for Insights in Survey Research (CISR) at the International Republican Institute (IRI).

The survey was conducted from 30 May to 3 June 2026 using CATI (computer-assisted telephone interviews). The sample size was 2,404 respondents aged 18 and older.

The poll was conducted in all oblasts of Ukraine except temporarily occupied territories and areas where Ukrainian mobile coverage was unavailable at the time of the survey.

The margin of error is about 2% with a confidence level of 0.95.
