Details: At around 03:00, the authorities in Samara Oblast warned of a drone attack threat. By about 05:00, residents of Syzran reported hearing a series of explosions.
Videos and photos of the aftermath soon began circulating on social media. The footage shows a large fire and a thick column of black smoke rising above the refinery's industrial site.
According to monitoring channels, the Syzran oil refinery was the target of the attack.
Russian authorities have not yet released official information on the extent of the damage or whether there were any casualties.
The Syzran oil refinery is part of Rosneft and is one of the region's key fuel infrastructure facilities. It has a nominal processing capacity of up to 8.9 million tonnes of crude oil per year. The refinery produces petrol, diesel fuel, fuel oil and aviation kerosene, which Russia actively uses to supply its forces fighting in Ukraine.
The facility is located more than 800 km from the Ukrainian border.
Background: On 21 May, drones operated by Ukraine's defence forces severely damaged the refinery's primary crude oil processing unit, which accounts for more than 70% of its total processing capacity, forcing the facility to suspend operations temporarily.
