Quote from Sybiha: "Kyiv welcomes esteemed high-level guests on Ukraine's Statehood Day. President of the EU Commission von der Leyen and leaders of Southeast Europe will meet with President Zelenskyy for productive talks."
Details: Photos and videos posted by reporters show Romanian President Nicușor Dan, Moldovan President Maia Sandu, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, Albanian President Bajram Begaj and Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Janša.
Also arriving in the Ukrainian capital were North Macedonian Foreign Minister Nikola Dimitrov and Filip Ivanović, Montenegro's Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign and European Affairs.
They are expected to take part in the Ukraine-Southeast Europe Summit, the date and venue of which had not been publicly disclosed in advance.
Sybiha said that, among other issues, the summit will focus on "joint work to strengthen Europe, multilateral political interaction, and strengthening security and defence cooperation".
The fourth such summit was held in Odesa in 2025, while the previous one took place in Dubrovnik, Croatia.
Background:
- Last year, participants in the Ukraine-Southeast Europe Summit signed a declaration that condemned Russia's war against Ukraine "in the strongest possible terms" and called on the international community "to maintain and further strengthen sanctions against the Russian Federation".
- Vučić was the only participant who did not sign the declaration, saying that by doing so he "did not betray Russia".
