Details: On 15 July, ambassadors of the EU member states agreed to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians in the EU by another year, until 4 March 2028.
The extension also introduces a new provision under which newly arrived Ukrainian men of military age will no longer be eligible for temporary protection unless they can demonstrate that they are compliant with Ukraine's military service requirements and did not leave the country to evade military service.
The approval by the ambassadors is an intermediate step in the decision-making process. Formal adoption of the decision is expected later in July.
Background:

- The EU plans to adopt a decision on the status of Ukrainian refugees in July 2026; if not, the decision is expected in September.
