Possible Russian missile debris found off Norwegian coast near border with Russia

Debris of what is likely a Russian missile has been found in the Barents Sea off the coast of Norway in the country's far north.

Details: Norwegian fisherman Kenneth Stensen and wildlife photographer Morten Gåsvand spotted the suspicious debris in the water near the town of Kiberg. According to Gosvand, the object was almost 1.5 metres long.

They immediately reported the discovery to the Norwegian Armed Forces hotline, and coastguard personnel arrived shortly afterwards. By then, the suspected missile debris had been carried away in an unknown direction by currents and waves, but the pair managed to take a series of photographs.

Brynjar Stordal, a spokesperson for the Norwegian Armed Forces' operational headquarters in Bodø, said that given Russia's military activity in the region, such a discovery was not unexpected, as naval live-fire exercises were occasionally conducted nearby and debris could drift towards the Norwegian coast.

He also noted that such objects could remain dangerous and said the pair had done exactly the right thing by notifying the relevant authorities.
