Oil refinery in Russia's Syzran on fire after attack – photo

The Syzran oil refinery in Russia's Samara Oblast is on fire following a drone attack on 4 August, according to Russian and Ukrainian monitoring channels.

Details: At around 05:00, Exilenova+ reported a fire at the refinery and posted images showing thick black smoke rising above the facility.

Local authorities did not initially report an attack. However, at around 07:00, Fedorishchev announced that the all clear had been given in Samara Oblast.

Astra later analysed the available images and confirmed that the burning facility was the Syzran oil refinery. It said the fire had broken out as a result of a drone strike.

Background:

• On the night of 3-4 August, drone attacks also sparked fires at warehouse facilities belonging to Russian online retailer Wildberries in Russia's Leningrad and Moscow oblasts.
• The Syzran refinery had previously been forced to completely halt crude oil processing after a drone attack on 12 July, with the shutdown reported on 13 July.
• The refinery was also targeted by drones on 18 April and 21 May.
• The Syzran refinery produces approximately 800,000 tonnes of petrol and 1.5 million tonnes of diesel fuel annually.
