Russian Geran drone wreckage found in Moldova

The wreckage of a Russian Geran-2 drone has been found near the village of Văleni in Moldova's southern Cahul district.

Details: The drone wreckage is reported to have been recovered by law enforcement officers and seized as part of an investigation.

The General Police Inspectorate said that after examining the debris and its design features, materials and markings, experts have concluded that it was a Geran-2 drone.

All relevant pieces and items have been documented and will be sent for forensic examination.

Experts from the police unit responsible for explosives and technical examinations are currently conducting the investigation and establishing all the circumstances of the case.

Background:

• On 26 July, Romanian President Nicusor Dan reported that the third drone in three days had been shot down over the country's territory by the Romanian Air Force.
• The incident on 24 July was the first time Romania had used combat aircraft to shoot down a UAV. The drone was later confirmed to have been a Shahed-type UAV.
• It followed a series of incidents in which Russian drones crossed into Romanian territory and crashed there, mostly in border areas along the Danube during Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports.
• The most serious incident was in late May, when a Shahed-type drone reached the border city of Galați and struck the top floor of an apartment block, causing extensive damage.
