Ukraine's General Staff confirms strikes on Progress rocket and space centre and Savasleika airfield

Ukraine's defence forces struck the Rocket and Space Centre Progress in Samara and the Savasleika airfield in Russia's Nizhny Novgorod Oblast on the night of 14-15 August. Fires broke out at both facilities following the strikes.

Details: The General Staff reported that Rocket and Space Centre Progress is one of the key enterprises in Russia's rocket and space industry, manufacturing Soyuz-family launch vehicles.

These are used to launch Russian military, reconnaissance and communications satellites. In particular, the Soyuz-2.1b is used to deploy the Rassvet satellite constellation, which Russia positions as an answer to Starlink.

The plant also produces Earth remote sensing satellites, which, according to the General Staff, Russia uses for reconnaissance.

Ukraine's defence forces also struck the Savasleika airfield, where a fire was also recorded.

The airfield is used, in particular, as a base for MiG-31K interceptor aircraft capable of carrying Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles.

Background: Explosions and strikes were reported in the Russian city of Samara following an attack, with the Rocket and Space Centre Progress potentially among the targets.
