US President Donald Trump has posted a map of the Strait of Hormuz on Truth Social, labelling it as "new US territory".

Background:

• Trump first said he intended to declare the Strait of Hormuz US territory on 14 August during a speech on Long Island. Later, however, a White House official told the Wall Street Journal that Trump was joking.
• Iran responded by saying the Strait of Hormuz cannot be seized by a tweet, an aircraft carrier, an executive order or a campaign speech.
• On 18 August, Trump said no talks with Iran are underway or scheduled.
