Ukrainian foreign minister after meeting Swedish counterpart: Gripen jets being prepared to defend Ukrainian skies
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has held talks with Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard, who arrived in Kyiv on 24 August.

Details: Sybiha said the talks focused on concrete steps to protect Ukraine from Russian ballistic missile attacks.
Quote: "We are advancing the Anti-ballistic coalition to build shared defence solutions, coordinating to secure and deliver additional interceptors from partners, and preparing new anti-ballistic sanctions to disrupt Russia's production chains."
Details: Sybiha added that Sweden's "exceptional" Gripen fighter jets were being prepared to defend Ukrainian skies.
"We took stock of the implementation schedule for our leaders' agreements, as well as our ongoing work on the bilateral Drone Deal," the minister stressed.
He also briefed his Swedish counterpart on the situation on the battlefield and emphasised the need to neutralise Russian threats in the Black Sea to ensure freedom of navigation and uninterrupted global grain exports.
Background:
- On 30 June, Ukraine and Sweden signed an agreement for the purchase of 16 modern Gripen E fighter jets. Ukraine is buying the 16 Gripen Es using funds from a European loan and with support from the UK. Deliveries are due to begin in early 2029.
- Sweden will also donate 16 Gripen C/D fighter jets to Ukraine.
