Zelenskyy comments on strike on Bucha district: ammunition cannot be stored near residential areas

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has insisted that ammunition cannot be stored near residential buildings. The president was commenting on the aftermath of a Russian strike on a warehouse in the village of Myla, in the Bucha district near Kyiv, which caused munitions to explode.

Details: Zelenskyy said the strike and subsequent explosions caused significant damage to the surrounding infrastructure, damaging residential buildings and a care home for elderly people and people with disabilities.

As of the time of the report, 27 people were known to have been killed and dozens injured. Among those killed was Taras Didych, head of the Dmytrivka hromada, who Zelenskyy said had been helping to rescue people. Investigators from the National Police and the Security Service of Ukraine are conducting a pre-trial investigation, and criminal proceedings have been opened on charges of official negligence. • Powerful explosions were heard in the Bucha district of Kyiv Oblast on the evening of 28 August. A warehouse facility caught fire, and all traffic was blocked in both directions on the M-06 Kyiv-Chop road between kilometres 15 and 32.
• A similar incident occurred on 6 July 2026 in the town of Vyshneve, Kyiv Oblast, when a Russian strike on ammunition warehouses caused prolonged explosions, killing nine people and damaging more than 280 homes.
