Ukrainian ambassador summoned to Turkish Foreign Ministry over attacks on vessels

Ukraine's ambassador to Ankara has been summoned to the Turkish Foreign Ministry following attacks on two vessels operated by Türkiye in the Black Sea.

Details: The sources told Anadolu that Turkish officials stressed the need to ensure the safety of lives, property, shipping and the environment in the Black Sea and "issued the necessary warnings" during the meeting.

The vessel Lider Bordo Mavi was attacked on 26 August near the Russian Black Sea port city of Tuapse. The following day, the vessel Lider Kocatepe, which had been sent to tow the first vessel, was also targeted.

Background:

• On 4 August, Türkiye called on Russia and Ukraine to take steps to ensure the safety of shipping in the Black Sea after a drone attack near the Russian port of Novorossiysk damaged a Turkish-owned vessel and left three crew members seriously injured.
• Several days later, Bloomberg reported that Türkiye is restricting the movement of some commercial vessels in the Black Sea as the authorities are concerned about the growing number of Russian and Ukrainian attacks on vessels in the region.
