Kremlin sees "harbingers of war" in Berlin's response to Leipzig drone incident

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said he sees "harbingers of war" in the accusations against Moscow and the measures taken in response to an incident in which a drone carrying explosives was found at Leipzig airport.

Details: Lavrov saw "signals of the start of a real war" in the reaction of Germany and its partners to the drone incident at Leipzig airport.

"They found some drone. They said it was a Russian drone and nobody bothered to investigate. By and large, this is the start of a real war," the Russian foreign minister said.

"They expelled the consulate general from Bonn and announced that they had terminated the agreement. They are closing the Russian House in Berlin. I recall that before the start of World War II, or rather the Great Patriotic War [as the Russians call WWII, primarily the conflict between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany – ed.], the Germans also closed their diplomatic missions," Lavrov added. 

He added that he sees the same signals in Germany's intentions to strengthen its armed forces.

"All those announcements that Merz made about making Germany the number one military power in Europe again – they are being put into practice. He is essentially going to declare war on us. The lessons of history have not been learned at all, it turns out that these metastases of Nazism have begun to break through," Sergei Lavrov said, adding that the Kremlin will "draw its conclusions".

• On 1 September, Germany directly accused Russia of a hybrid attack at Leipzig airport at the beginning of August and announced response measures, including the closure of the consulate general in Bonn and the Russian House in Berlin.
