US envoy Kushner in Kyiv: Trump is very determined to see an end to war

US presidential envoy Jared Kushner has spoken of Donald Trump's determination to achieve a lasting peace in Ukraine.

Details: Kushner, who is visiting Kyiv with Steve Witkoff, said that Trump had asked them to convey his personal regards to the people of Ukraine.

"He [Trump – ed.] wanted us to convey that he sees it as a very, very hard and complex problem. But it's a very worthy problem worth solving – not just to figure out how do we end the current war, but how do we create the right conditions and arrangements for a long-term and durable peace," he said.

According to Kushner, this means achieving a peace that "will allow Ukraine to use the amazing bravery, ingenuity and strength that it's used to get through the last years of war in order to build itself into a great nation that it has the fullest potential to achieve".

"President Trump would really like to see this. A lot of politicians get afraid of complex problems. President Trump always says: the harder it is, if it's worthy, you have to give it everything you have," Kushner said.

Therefore, he said, Trump is very determined to see an end to the war, an end to the deaths, and relief for families.

• The US presidential envoys arrived in Kyiv by train on 6 September and were met by President Zelenskyy at Sofiiska Square. After a tour of St Sophia Cathedral, they proceeded to the negotiations, which are taking place in several stages, including sessions involving national security advisers from France, the UK and Germany. Two rounds have concluded so far.
• Yuri Ushakov, an aide to Russian ruler Vladimir Putin, said Putin told the US envoys during Saturday's talks that he is confident his war aims will be achieved. The White House described the talks as "substantive" and announced that the next steps will be unveiled in the coming weeks.
