Finland completes investigation into Ukrainian drones entering its territory

Finland has completed its investigation into incidents in which Ukrainian drones carrying explosives accidentally entered the country.

Details: The investigation found that all four drones that entered Finnish territory in spring 2026 originated in Ukraine.

The incidents were investigated jointly by the National Bureau of Investigation and the Finnish Border Guard.

In a joint statement, they said all four drones originated in Ukraine, were similar in model and had been manufactured for military use. The statement confirmed that each drone was carrying explosives.

"The preliminary investigations have not revealed any evidence that would have justified continuing the pursuit of criminal liability," the institutions noted.

The statement also said that Finland had not been the target in any of the incidents. Instead, all the drones had been flying towards Russian territory, but were intercepted by GPS-jamming systems in Kaliningrad and redirected towards Finland. The National Bureau of Investigation and Finnish Border Guard also said that wind may have affected their flight paths.
