Ukrainian forces strike oil infrastructure at Russia's ice-free port of Makhachkala

Ukraine's Special Operations Forces (SOF) has struck facilities at the Makhachkala Commercial Sea Port on the Caspian Sea coast in Russia.

Details: The special forces explained that one of the key elements of the port's infrastructure is its oil harbour, designed to handle tankers with a capacity of up to 10,000 tonnes and a draught of up to 10 metres. An oil depot is also located directly near the port's territory.

Makhachkala port holds strategic importance for Russian logistics. It is Russia's only ice-free, deep-water port on the Caspian Sea, operating year-round. Various types of cargo pass through it, and the port itself is a key link in the North-South international transport corridor, which provides Russia with an alternative route to Iran, India and other South Asian countries.

Striking the oil component of this transport hub directly affects Russia's ability to use the Caspian Sea to transport and transship energy resources, SOF said.

In addition, according to data from the Ukrainian company Fire Point, Makhachkala has been used as one of the delivery points for Iranian attack drones bound for Russia via the Caspian Sea. From there, they were later moved to areas from which they were deployed against Ukraine.
