Canada sanctions Russians involved in deportation of Ukrainian children

The Canadian government has added eight more Russians to its sanctions list over their involvement in the illegal deportation and forced transfer of Ukrainian children to Russia as well as their indoctrination and militarisation.

Details: Those added to the sanctions list include Russian Emergencies Minister Aleksandr Kurenkov; Grigori Gurov, Head of the Federal Agency for Youth Affairs (Rosmolodezh); Artur Orlov, Chairman of the board of the Movement of the First; and Denis Chernobai, head of the movement's regional branch council.

Canada is also imposing sanctions on Vladimir Khromov, an adviser in the Office of the Commissioner for Children's Rights, as well as Elena Milskaya, head of the Board of Trustees of the National Centre for Assistance to Missing and Affected Children. Alexandra Kulgina and Vitaly Suk have also been added to the sanctions list.

The Canadian government said these individuals have been or are involved in the deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia, as well as their indoctrination and militarisation.

Background:

• In May, the United Kingdom announced a new package of sanctions against Russia over the abduction of Ukrainian children, as well as attempts to interfere in future elections in Armenia.
• On 11 May, the Council of the European Union imposed sanctions on individuals and entities responsible for the abduction of Ukrainian children from temporarily occupied territories.
• The sanctions were announced to coincide with a high-level meeting jointly chaired by the European Union, Ukraine and Canada, aimed at planning concrete steps to return children abducted by Russia to Ukraine and hold Russia accountable.
