EU ambassadors fail to extend Russia sanctions due to opposition from Slovakia and France

Rikard Jozwiak, Europe editor at Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, has reported that EU ambassadors have once again been unable to reach agreement on extending personal sanctions imposed over Russia's aggression against Ukraine.

Details: Jozwiak reported that according to his information, the EU ambassadors have once again failed to extend the sanctions against Russia and will meet again on Monday – the day before the 15 September deadline.

Quote: "Slovakia still wants Usmanov and Fridman delisted but the issue is now further complicated as France also wants Usmanov off the blacklist."

Background: The restrictive measures targeting individuals were last extended on 14 March. On that occasion Slovakia also pushed until the last minute for the Russian oligarchs Mikhail Fridman and Alisher Usmanov to be removed from the list.
