Drunken youths tear down Ukrainian flag from building in Vilnius, detained

Two young men have been detained in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius after tearing down a Ukrainian flag from a flagpole on a building on Gediminas Avenue.

Details: It is reported that at around 03:00 on Monday, two young men tore down a Ukrainian flag from a flagpole on a building on Gediminas Avenue in Vilnius.

The perpetrators were quickly caught and detained. The men, aged 26 and 31, were intoxicated, with breathalyser tests showing alcohol levels of 1.49 and 2.43‰ respectively.

An investigation into the incident has been launched. The nationality of those detained has not been disclosed.

Background:

• Proceedings were launched in Poland after controversial politician Grzegorz Braun damaged a monument to the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). [The UPA, or Ukrainian Insurgent Army, was a nationalist paramilitary organisation that fought for Ukrainian independence during and after World War II, primarily against Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.]
• Prior to that, the monument had been subjected to yet another act of vandalism.
