Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that Russia has targeted his aircraft twice in recent weeks while he was on board.

Quote: "In Moldova, my presidential jet was there, and that's why they attacked Moldova. When we went back home, again through Chișinău, they did the same."

Details: Zelenskyy added that this was part of a Russian strategy aimed at intimidating him and other foreign leaders.

He recalled that on 13 September, a Russian drone had hit a locomotive on the Ukraine-Poland border. At the time, former CIA director David Petraeus was on another train at Yahodyn railway station, exactly when the attack took place.

Quote: "Maybe they didn't know that some Americans had been there or maybe, oppositely, they knew, because I don't trust them. I think that they knew."

Background:

  • Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said a drone had almost crashed into the plane carrying Zelenskyy and first lady Olena Zelenska as it was leaving Moldova for Oslo.
  • When Zelenskyy's aircraft was departing from Chișinău, Moldova did partially close its airspace because of a Russian drone that had entered the country. However, there were no reports of a strike near Chișinău Airport. The drone left Moldovan airspace and flew into Romania.
  • Moldova's Defence Ministry said early reports indicated that the drone was a Shahed UAV.
  • A report later said that a drone had fallen in a field, but its type was not identified.
