Polish foreign minister insists his country is not behind Hungary's blocking of Ukraine's EU accession

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has insisted that Warsaw has nothing to do with Hungary blocking the opening of new clusters in Ukraine's EU accession negotiations.

Details: Sikorski denied that Warsaw was in any way involved in the Hungarian government's decision to continue blocking the opening of further negotiating clusters for Ukraine.

"That is not true. We are not blocking a single chapter," the minister said. He also rejected suggestions that Hungary had cited an alleged request from Poland during discussions.

"This is not a matter of speculation. You either raise your hand for blocking or you don't. We don't," Sikorski stressed.

He declined to predict when the remaining negotiating clusters for Ukraine might be opened and linked a positive outcome to whether Kyiv and Budapest can reach a compromise on minority rights.

"There is a vigorous debate between Ukraine and the new Hungarian government on minority issues, and I hope it produces a positive result," the Polish foreign minister said.

Background: Last week, the Council of the EU Working Party on Enlargement and Countries Negotiating Accession to the EU (COELA) failed to approve the results of the screening of negotiating clusters 2 and 3 for Ukraine because Hungary continued to block the decision.
