Rubio meets Russian foreign minister on sidelines of UN General Assembly in New York

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held a closed-door meeting in New York on 23 September on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

Details: Zakharova posted a photo from the meeting between Rubio and Lavrov in New York, noting that the talks were being held behind closed doors.

No details of the talks are currently known.

Background:

On 22 September, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with his US counterpart Donald Trump in New York.
After the meeting, Zelenskyy said the US president is "positive" about granting Ukraine licences to produce Patriot missiles.
The Ukrainian president also said the US had not asked Ukraine at the meeting to unilaterally halt strikes on Russian energy facilities.
At the beginning of the meeting, Trump said he would discuss strikes on Russian oil refineries with Zelenskyy.
