Zelenskyy meets Wall Street executives to discuss Ukraine's reconstruction

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Wall Street executives in the US as part of Kyiv's efforts to attract investment to finance Ukraine's reconstruction.

Details: Ukrainian government officials said the meeting took place on 23 September on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York. The talks focused largely on helping Ukraine get through the winter and supporting its economy.

"Ukraine faces a brutal ⁠winter as stepped-up Russian strikes on its infrastructure and key ​export industries deepen the country's budget crisis. The daily cost ​of the war grew to about US$190 million this year," Reuters reported.

The meeting was organised by US banking giant Citigroup and the US Chamber of Commerce and was attended by representatives of more than 20 US companies.

The Ukrainian government said the participants also discussed establishing a sovereign wealth fund and strengthening Ukraine's economy with the support of members of the International Advisory Council.

Citi CEO Jane Fraser said that "the private sector will play an essential role in the country's reconstruction".

Citi, which has operated in Ukraine for more than 25 years, said it intends to help attract investment and support Ukrainian companies.

Other participants included executives from BlackRock, Franklin Templeton, Lazard, Macquarie, State Street, Jane Street, Fairfax and McKinsey & Company.

Representatives of the US Chamber of Commerce, the US International Development Finance Corporation, the World Bank, the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development also attended the event.
