German foreign minister briefs Ukraine on details of meeting with Russian counterpart
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has held a phone call with his German counterpart Johann Wadephul after the latter met Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Details: Sybiha said Wadephul had briefed him on the outcome of his conversation with Lavrov, which took place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. The Ukrainian minister expressed his gratitude to Wadephul for conveying Kyiv's position to the Russian side.
"I am grateful to Minister Wadephul for conveying our firm shared positions to the Russian side: insisting that Moscow end its war, reaffirming unwavering support for Ukraine, and warning against further hostile actions against Europe," Sybiha said.
He added that he and the German foreign minister had discussed their next joint steps to advance peace efforts and achieve a ceasefire.
"We also spoke about ways to increase pressure on Russia and strengthen Ukraine's resilience ahead of winter. I thanked Germany for its leadership in supporting Ukraine," the Ukrainian foreign minister said.
Background:
- The meeting between the German and Russian foreign ministers in New York was their first since 2022. Although representatives of the German and Russian governments have attended various international meetings since then, there had been no direct talks at foreign-minister level.
- Media reports indicated that during his meeting with Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul urged Russia to "abandon its dangerous course of escalation towards Germany, Europe and NATO".
- US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was reported to have met Lavrov in New York on 23 September.
- Following the meeting, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Lavrov had complained to Rubio about Ukrainian strikes on targets in Russia.
