EU extends EUMAM training mission for Ukrainian troops by two years

The European Union has extended the mandate of the EU Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine (EUMAM), which provides training for Ukrainian military personnel, for another two years as part of an update to the mission.

Details: The EU will continue the EUMAM mission for another two years.

"On training, member states agreed on the first step of strategic review of EUMAM, extending our mission for Ukraine for another two years," Kallas said.

She added that the EU will "move ahead with establishing a coordination cell in Kyiv, focusing on battlefield lessons and also strengthening military education".

For reference: The main task of EUMAM is to train Ukrainian military personnel, including individual training, unit cohesion exercises and specialised training. The mission also coordinates EU member states' training efforts for Ukraine and is funded, among other sources, through the European Peace Facility.

Background:

• Kallas previously said that €900 million from the €6.6 billion unlocked from the European Peace Facility had been earmarked for EUMAM.
• On 28 September, it also became known that the Netherlands will allocate €10 million for the operation of training centres for military personnel in Ukraine.
• Germany previously said that the €6.6 billion from the Peace Facility, which was unblocked by Hungary, should be transferred to Ukraine in full, but not all EU member states support this.
